Heavy rain and flooding drive ants, mosquitoes, roaches and rodents toward San Antonio homes. Here's what to watch for and how to protect your property.

San Antonio can go from drought to flash flood in a single afternoon. After a big storm, many homeowners notice pests they didn't have a week earlier. That's because heavy rain floods the places pests normally live and sends them looking for dry ground, and your home is often the closest option.
When soil gets saturated, ant colonies move. Fire ants can even link together into floating rafts in flood water. After a storm, watch for new mounds near the foundation, and for ants trailing into kitchens, bathrooms, electrical boxes and AC units. See our guide on fire ants that keep coming back.
Every bucket, gutter, tarp and low spot that holds water after a storm can become a mosquito nursery. In warm weather, a mosquito can develop from egg to adult in about a week, so expect a surge a week or two after heavy rain. Empty standing water as soon as the rain stops. Our backyard mosquito control guide has a full checklist.
American roaches live in storm drains and sewers. Rats live along creek beds and drainage areas. Rising water pushes both into yards, garages and homes. You may see roaches coming up through floor drains and rodents looking for a dry place in the attic or garage.
Subterranean termites often swarm on warm days after spring rain. Wet soil and moisture near your foundation also make your home more attractive to them. If you see swarmers or discarded wings, read signs of termites.
Damp walls, wet mulch and leaky gutters attract silverfish, earwigs, pill bugs and millipedes. If these show up after rain, the real fix is drying things out. See moisture pests and how to fix the cause.
If water got inside, focus on safety and drying out first. Wet drywall, insulation and flooring can attract pests and grow mold. Once the area is dry, an inspection can catch any pest problems that moved in during the cleanup.

Heavy rain floods ant colonies in the soil, so the ants move to drier ground, which is often inside or right next to your home.
Usually about one to two weeks, depending on temperature, since that's how long it can take eggs to develop into biting adults.
