Foggers, sprays and home remedies rarely get rid of bed bugs. Learn why DIY treatments fail and what professional bed bug treatment does differently.

When you find bed bugs, buying a spray or a fogger and handling it yourself is tempting. It feels faster and cheaper. Unfortunately, DIY treatment rarely works, and it often makes the job harder and more expensive later. Here's why.
Bed bugs are flat enough to squeeze into a crack the thickness of a credit card. They hide in mattress seams, box spring frames, headboard joints, outlet plates, baseboards and picture frames. A spray only kills the bugs it touches directly, and most of the population is hidden at any given time.
Bug bombs release a mist that settles on open surfaces. It doesn't get into the cracks where bed bugs live. Worse, it can drive them deeper into walls and into other rooms, which turns a one-bedroom problem into a whole-house problem. In apartments, it can push them into the unit next door.
Many bed bug populations have developed resistance to the pyrethroid insecticides found in many consumer products. You might kill a few bugs, but the rest survive and keep breeding.
Most sprays don't kill bed bug eggs. Even if a treatment wipes out the adults, eggs hatch over the next week or two and the cycle starts over. Without follow-up, the problem comes right back.
Bed bugs don't stay in the bed. They can spread to couches, recliners, nightstands, closets and other bedrooms. A DIY job that only covers the mattress leaves those groups behind.
Rubbing alcohol, essential oils and similar remedies may kill a bug on contact, but they don't reach hidden populations or eggs. Alcohol is also a fire hazard when sprayed around a bedroom.
Wash and dry bedding on high heat, vacuum the mattress and bed frame, put the mattress in an encasement, and keep sleeping in the same room so you don't spread them. Our guide on what to do first has the full checklist.

Rarely. Fog doesn't reach the cracks where bed bugs hide, and it can scatter them into other rooms.
It depends on the size of the infestation and the method. Heat treatments can work in one visit, while other methods usually need a follow-up.
Washing, drying, vacuuming and encasing help, but they rarely remove every bug and egg. A professional inspection confirms whether the problem is really gone.
