Key Takeaways
- Brown recluse spiders have a violin-shaped mark and six eyes in pairs, and they hide in undisturbed clutter.
- Black widows are shiny black with a red hourglass under the abdomen and live in dark, sheltered spots.
- Most spiders in San Antonio homes, like wolf spiders and cellar spiders, are harmless to people.
- Reducing clutter and controlling the insects spiders eat is the best long-term spider control.
Most spiders in and around San Antonio homes are harmless, and many help by eating other pests. Two species found in Texas, the brown recluse and the black widow, do deserve respect. Here's how to tell them apart from the look-alikes.
Brown Recluse
- Look: light to medium brown, with a darker violin-shaped mark on the back, the neck of the violin pointing toward the rear. Legs are uniform in color, with no stripes or bands.
- The best clue: six eyes arranged in three pairs. Most spiders have eight.
- Where they hide: closets, storage boxes, garages, attics, under furniture and inside shoes and clothing that haven't been moved in a while.
- Behavior: shy and not aggressive. Most bites happen when someone presses against one, like putting on a shoe or rolling over in bed.
Black Widow
- Look: females are shiny black with a red or orange hourglass shape on the underside of the abdomen.
- Webs: messy, irregular webs close to the ground.
- Where they hide: wood piles, meter boxes, sheds, garages, under patio furniture and in dark corners of outdoor storage.
- Behavior: not aggressive. Bites usually happen when someone reaches into a hiding spot.
Harmless Look-Alikes
- Wolf spiders are large, fast, hairy brown spiders that hunt on the ground. They're scary-looking but not dangerous.
- Cellar spiders ("daddy longlegs") have tiny bodies and very long thin legs and hang in corners.
- Common house spiders build tangled webs in corners and are often mistaken for widows.
- Other brown spiders are often called brown recluses. Check for the six eyes and plain, unbanded legs.
If You Think You've Been Bitten
Clean the bite, apply a cold compress and try to safely capture or photograph the spider. Get medical care if the bite gets worse, a sore develops, or you have symptoms like severe pain, muscle cramps, fever or trouble breathing. Seek care right away for young children and older adults. How to Keep Spiders Out
- Cut down clutter in closets, garages and attics. Store items in sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard.
- Shake out shoes, gloves and clothing that have been sitting.
- Move bed frames away from walls, and keep bedding off the floor.
- Seal gaps around doors, windows and utility lines.
- Move firewood and debris away from the house.
- Control other insects. Fewer bugs means less food for spiders.
- Turn off or switch outdoor lights to yellow bulbs, which attract fewer of the insects spiders hunt.
